About Us

This museum was established in 1979 as part of the cultural project of Kobe Chinese Chamber of Commerce.

In the exhibition room (2nd floor, about 135㎡), we display miscellaneous items that have actually been used in everyday life and work, such as photos, calligraphic works, paintings, costumes, scissors, sewing machines, baskets for giving out gifts, etc. They tell the story of the 150 years of Kobe overseas Chinese history since the opening of Hyogo Port in 1868 (Keio 3).

There are also handwritten calligraphy by Sun Yat-sen and Liang Qi-chao, who were closely related to Kobe overseas Chinese, and manuscripts by Chen Shun-chen, a writer born in Kobe.

These exibits will lead you to understand the predecessors of the overseas Chinese, their organizations and occupations, Kobe Chinese School, the hardships they went through during the war, the new departures after the war, the interacting with other foreign schools, and the vitality of Nankin-machi (Kobe China Town). And hopefully, that will help you to consider about multicultural symbiosis.
